A conscious change of pace

We are Annemarie and Tom, originally from the Netherlands. After years of urban, screen-based work, we felt the need for a different kind of life — one more connected to the land and to practical, everyday work.

Annemarie wanted to focus on growing organic food, while Tom wanted to spend more time cooking, curing, and fermenting, and bring these interests into daily life.

When we came across a slightly forgotten agriturismo in the hills of Le Marche, it felt like the right place to begin.

Living and working with the land

Since moving here, we’ve gradually renovated the farmhouse to make it sustainable and future-proof, while bringing the land back to life. Today, we care for our olive grove, vegetable garden, fruit orchard and chickens, and produce our own olive oil, honey, and natural skincare.

Our days follow the rhythm of the seasons — pruning, planting, harvesting, cooking, hosting guests, and raising our two young sons, Sam and Timo. Life here is active and hands-on, but not rushed.

Hosting, simply

We host in a way that reflects how we live: personal, unhurried, and attentive. Whether guests come for a few quiet days, a longer stay, or to join one of our food experiences, we aim to create a place where it’s easy to slow down and feel at ease.

The name Scala

The name Scala comes from the farmhouse’s original name, La Scala di Seta. In Italian, scala means staircase — and as you arrive, a stone staircase leads you up to the B&B rooms. It’s a small detail we liked and decided to keep as part of the name.
